Caring for the Carers

was held on Tuesday 25 July 2023

at St Ignatius Church, Kensington Terrace, Toowong.

The event was recorded and can still be viewed via our Parish’s YouTube here.

Through history women have been the nurturers. Today, women dominate both paid and unpaid health and social care. But who cares for the carers? This year Kate O’Brien speaks to five women who have invested their lives in nurturing others. Where do they find the strength?

Queensland Local Hero YASMIN KHAN is founder of Eidfest and Director of the Bangle Foundation, a domestic abuse support service for South Asian Women.

Highly qualified Plenary Council Member TONI JANKE is a Wuthathi, Meriam and Yadighana woman and a singer-songwriter.

Faber Centre Director MARY ROBSON worked in finance before the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises set her on a new path.

Inspirational Toowong Parish elder and centenarian SHEILA CORCORAN shares her deep faith and joyous life-giving spirituality.

Associate Professor CAROL DOUGLAS first worked in palliative care in Kota Kinabalu. Today she guides the training of Qld’s palliative medicine specialists Caring for the Carer.

Co-presented by The Grail in Australia

who were selling copies of “In her Voice” for $25 each at the event.

In Her Voice is a unique Australian book that showcases the often-unheard voices of Christian women. It is powerful and ground-breaking.

Thank You!

The WNS 2023 team would like to thank all those who contributed to making the event a great success.  Illness and injury impacted our host Kate O’Brien and speaker Sheila Corcoran, respectively.  Danielle Lynch and Kerry Rush performed in their place seamlessly and in the spirit of those they represented.

A great team of volunteers assisted with the livestreaming, hospitality, event promotions, photography, the production of supporting documents (prayer cards, Sheila Corcoran’s vignettes) and the sale of ‘In Her Voice’.

The food provided by The Grail was generous and appreciated by the audience who gathered for supper to share their own stories with friends both new and from long ago!

Sheila’s vignettes can be located on the parish website along with details of The Grail – an international movement and community for women.

We are grateful to The Grail for partnering with us to offer this cherished event.
